Hangers that garments do not slip off: rubber coating, notches and clips

Silk, viscose, satin and fine knits slip off a smooth hanger, and staff spend the day picking them up. Here are the four solutions, when to choose which, and how to avoid marks on the garments.
  • A rubberised surface holds smooth fabrics by friction, not pressure, and leaves no marks. The standard choice for tops, dresses and blouses.
  • Notches in the shoulders keep straps and strappy dresses in place; all our wooden hangers have them.
  • Clips for trousers and skirts, a trouser bar for trousers in a suit. All solutions are in stock, delivery in 1–3 working days.

Four solutions, four types of garment

Rubberised hanger
Matt rubber coating over solid wood. The fabric stays put on the shoulder because the friction is high, not because anything clamps it. For silk, viscose, satin and light knits.
Notches for straps
A notch in each shoulder where the strap sits. Holds dresses, tops and lingerie with narrow straps, also on lacquered hangers.
Clips and trouser bar
Clips with a rubber-coated inside hold trousers and skirts at the waistband. The trouser bar holds trousers in a suit without clips. Neither leaves marks when used correctly.

Why garments slip off

A lacquered wooden hanger is smooth, and smooth fabrics have little friction against it. When the hanger is moved, or a customer touches the next hanger, nothing holds back and the top ends up on the floor. The problem is greatest for wide necklines, thin straps and heavy, smooth dresses, where the weight pulls down at the sides.

That costs time on the floor and makes the rack untidy. Customers who meet garments on the floor or crooked hangers read it as low quality, whatever the price tag says. Read more about why the hanger affects sales.

Rubberized: friction instead of pressure

One rubberized hanger is a wooden hanger with a matt rubber coating over the whole surface. The fabric stays put because it cannot slide, not because it is held tight. That is why the rubber coating leaves no marks: there is no point where the pressure concentrates.

It is the standard choice for dresses, tops and blouses in smooth fabrics, and for showrooms where the hangers are moved many times a day. Our rubberised models are the Bedford shirt hanger, Bedford clip hanger, Bedford coat hanger and Carlton coat hanger with trouser bar, all in matt black, from €1.65 per pc excl. VAT.

Notches for straps

The notch is a small cut in each shoulder where the strap is laid. It holds dresses, tops and lingerie with narrow straps without clips or ribbon loops. All our wooden hangers have notches in the shoulders, lacquered and rubberised alike, so it needs no special model.

Use the notch actively when hanging up: the strap should sit at the bottom of the notch, not on top of the shoulder. Then it stays, even when the customer takes the next hanger down.

Clips and trouser bar without marks

Clips are the answer for trousers and skirts. Our clip hangers have metal clips with a rubber-coated inside that spreads the pressure over a larger area, and the clips can be moved towards the centre to fit narrow waistbands. The rule is simple: always clip at the waistband, never in the fabric. The waistband is reinforced and takes the pressure; the fabric is not.

For trousers in a suit, the trouser bar is the gentle choice: the trousers are laid over a rubber- or foam-coated bar and held by their own weight. Read trouser bar or clip hanger.

How to choose by garment

  • Silk, viscose, satin, light knits: rubberised shirt hanger.
  • Dresses and tops with straps: any wooden hanger with notches; rubberised if the fabric is also smooth.
  • Trousers and skirts: clip hanger with rubber-coated clips.
  • Suits and outfits: coat hanger with trouser bar.
  • Jackets with smooth lining: rubberised coat hanger, so the jacket does not slide towards the edge.

Frequently asked questions

No. The rubber coating holds the garment by friction across the whole shoulder, not by pressure at one point, so there are no marks, not even on silk and viscose.

Clip at the waistband, never in the fabric, and use clips with a rubber-coated inside. For very delicate fabrics a hanger with trouser bar is the safest choice.

Yes, all our wooden hangers have notches in both shoulders. The notch works best when the strap is laid right down at the bottom of it.
