Clothes rack on wheels for stores, trade fairs and showrooms: how to choose

In the store the rack on wheels is used to move goods between stockroom, floor and window, and as an extra rail during sales. Here stability and looks count most; the rack is on show, so the customer sees it.

At the trade fair the rack has to come in from the car park, over carpets and cables, stand for three days and go back again. Here wheels, load capacity and folding count.

• Width: the rail extends from 98 to 172 cm, so the rack suits anything from a sample collection to a full season.
• Height: 161.5 cm, so coats and dresses hang freely.
• Wheels: 19 cm rubber wheels that roll on cobblestones, gravel and thresholds.
• Load capacity: up to 50 kg. There is room for four garment bags with 15–25 styles in each, i.e. up to 100 styles on one rack.
• Weight and folding: 9 kg, folds without tools and lies flat in the boot.

Allow 30–50 hangers per metre of rail, depending on how thick the garments are. On Rolling Jones' 172 cm that is 50–85 styles hung directly on the rail, or four garment bags with up to 100 styles when the garments must be protected in transit. If more has to go along, two racks are better than one overloaded: the customer must be able to see the individual styles.

• Rubber wheels of at least 10 cm, larger if the rack goes outdoors.
• Load capacity of at least 40 kg.
• Adjustable width, so the rack suits both small and large collections.
• Folds without tools and under 10 kg if one person has to carry it.
• Steel or aluminium frame with a wide footprint; avoid racks that tip when the rail is extended.
• Option for a logo if the rack is on show at customers or trade fairs.
