Garment bags: length, closure and logo

The length is chosen by the longest garment the bag has to carry. 90 cm covers jackets, blazers, shirts, tops and skirts. 130 cm covers dresses, coats and suits, where the trousers hang on the trouser bar under the jacket. Many brands run both: 130 cm for outerwear and dresses, 90 cm for the rest, so the bags take no more room in the car than necessary.

Both lengths are 50 × 40 cm at the base and take 15–25 styles, depending on how thick the garments are.

The metal clamp is a bar at the top of the bag that closes around the hanger hooks with a click. The hangers cannot shift, looks stay in order, and the bag can be lifted by the clamp with the whole contents. The zip is heavy-duty YKK and runs all the way down, so the bag opens fully when the collection is shown. The drawstring closure gathers the bag around the hooks with a cord. It is lighter and cheaper and suits storage, shipping of samples and use where the bag is rarely opened on the way. 130 cm, €45 per pc.

• Hang looks in order, the heaviest nearest the clamp, so the weight is spread.
• Use identical hangers in the bag; mixed hangers hang at different heights and crease the garments. Hangers with trouser bar keep trousers and jacket together in the bag.
• Close the clamp before pulling up the zip, so the hooks do not slide down into the bag.
• Four bags fit on a Rolling Jones clothes rack; then the whole collection can be rolled into the meeting without repacking.
