Suit hangers: how to hang a suit correctly

A suit makes two demands on the hanger: the shoulder must carry the jacket without pressing, and the trousers must hang in the same place without slipping. Here is what to look for, which models we recommend, and what they cost from stock.
  • Choose a coat hanger with a wide, curved shoulder of around 40 mm, so the jacket shoulder keeps its shape.
  • A rubber-coated trouser bar keeps the trousers in place, so the whole suit hangs on one hanger.
  • Crosby and Carlton coat hangers with trouser bar are in stock. From €2.89 per pc excl. VAT, pack of 50, delivery in 1–3 working days.

Three things that decide whether a suit hangs correctly

The shoulder
A jacket shoulder is shaped and must be carried across its full width. A narrow shirt hanger leaves a bump and lets the shoulders drop. A coat hanger with a 40 mm wide, curved shoulder follows the jacket's shape and holds it, even after a day on the rack.
The trouser bar
The trousers are laid over a bar below the hanger. If the bar is rubber-coated, they stay in place when the hanger is moved, and there are no clip marks in the waistband. The suit hangs together and can be taken down as one unit.
The width
Our coat hangers are 44 cm wide and fit standard men's sizes. If the jacket is cut slim, the shoulder may stick out slightly; that looks better than a hanger that is too narrow and pushes the shoulder up.

Why an ordinary shirt hanger is not enough

A shirt hanger is slim because shirts have no padded shoulders. Hang a suit jacket on it and the hanger only carries the innermost part of the shoulder. The rest hangs free and pulls downwards, and after a few days it shows as a bump at the armhole. In a store that means the jacket has to be steamed before it can be shown, and the customer sees a misshapen product on the rack.

One coat hanger solves this with a wide, curved shoulder that spreads the weight across the full shoulder width. It is the same logic as in a tailor's wardrobe: the jacket hangs the way it was made to hang.

Trouser bar or clips for the trousers?

For a suit shown as a set, the trouser bar is the right choice. The trousers are laid over the bar with the crease down, the jacket hangs on top, and the customer sees the suit as one product. The bar on our models is coated with rubber or foam, so the trousers do not slip, even when the hanger is moved between rack and fitting room.

Clips are better where trousers are sold separately and changed many times a day. Read more in the guide trouser bar or clip hanger.

The models: Crosby and Carlton

Crosby coat hanger with trouser bar is the classic suit hanger in glossy lacquered wood, black or white, 44 cm wide with a 40 mm shoulder and fixed trouser bar. €2.89 per pc excl. VAT.

Carlton coat hanger with trouser bar has the same wide shoulder but a matt, rubberised black surface and a foam-coated trouser bar. The rubber coating gives grip for jackets with smooth linings and trousers in light fabrics. €3.59 per pc.

Carlton shirt hanger with trouser bar is the light alternative for combinations of shirt and trousers or blazer and chinos, where the shoulder is not padded. Natural wood or black, €1.39 per pc.

All three are sold in packs of 50 and ship from our warehouse in Denmark in 1–3 working days. See also black hangers and white hangers on one page.

How to hang the suit

  • The jacket: fasten the top button so the front keeps its shape, and pull the shoulder seam out to the edge of the hanger.
  • The trousers: fold them along the crease and lay them over the bar, so the legs hang equally far down on both sides. The trouser bar should sit centred under the jacket, so the suit looks calm from the front.
  • On the rack: keep the same spacing between hangers, e.g. 30–40 hangers per metre for suits, so the shoulders do not press against each other.
  • Colour: one hanger colour throughout the menswear department. Black lacquer or rubberised black is the standard choice for suits, natural wood for more classic concepts. See the colour guide.

Logo on suit hangers

The coat hanger is the hanger the customer holds longest in the fitting room, and it often goes home with them. A logo on the shoulder or in the centre is printed in 1–2 Pantone colours or laser-engraved from 300 hangers in total, and you can mix coat, shirt and clip hangers in the same order. Delivery approx. 3 weeks from approved proof. See the prices under logo to hangers, or try your logo in the The Logo Designer.

Frequently asked questions

44 cm fits most men's jackets in sizes 46–54. What matters most is the shoulder depth: about 40 mm wide and curved, so the jacket shoulder is carried across its full width.

Yes, that is exactly the purpose of a coat hanger with trouser bar. The trousers are laid over the rubber- or foam-coated bar under the jacket, and the suit is taken down as one unit.

Not if the trousers are laid over the bar along the crease. The bar is round and coated, so no sharp edge forms in the fabric.
